What Is Korean Black Rice?
Korean black rice (Oryza sativa) gets its color from anthocyanins — water-soluble polyphenolic pigments concentrated in the outer bran layer. The two predominant pigments are cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) and peonidin-3-glucoside. These are the same antioxidant compounds that give many dark berries and vegetables their deep hues.
Anthocyanins matter in skin and scalp science because they neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) — unstable molecules generated by UV exposure, pollution, and normal metabolism that, in excess, damage cells and accelerate visible aging. Because your scalp is skin, the oxidative stress that ages facial skin is relevant to the environment your follicles live in. That's the mechanistic thread running through the research below.

Here's the honest framing: most of the strongest data comes from cell models and in-vitro studies, not from large clinical trials on human hair growth. With that caveat stated up front, the antioxidant biology is well documented.

We want to be straight with you about the limits. Much of the supporting research is in-vitro or cell-model work, and human clinical data on topical black rice and hair are still limited. As the science currently stands, published research does not establish a direct causal link between topically applied black rice extract and measurable hair growth outcomes in human clinical trials. What is well documented is the antioxidant and cell-supportive activity of anthocyanins — a strong, plausible foundation, not a growth claim.
